2013 District Conference Message

This message was first impressed upon me in June and July of 2012.

JUDGES 21:25

In those days there was no king there was no king in Israel, every man did that which was right in his own eyes.

JUDE 3-4

{3} But now I find that I must write about something else, urging you to defend the faith that God has entrusted once for all time to his holy people.

{4} I say this because some ungodly people have wormed their way into your churches, saying that God’s marvelous grace allows us to live immoral lives. NLT

ACTS 19:34

If the heathen can worship the false god how can we expect to be unified when we can’t praise our God for a season.

If I do my thing and you do your thing and everyone does his or her thing then we are in danger of collapsing from within and ultimately face extinction!  As a Church, as an Organization, and as a Family!  The true fact of the matter is we seriously need one another now more than ever.

In light of the continuing events in our world in general and in our own nation in particular it is not difficult to realize now more than ever our need for one another.

With that being said we can see all too well that there is a continual slide in the moral texture of our culture.

As I preached to Riverside two Sunday’s ago I stated to them and I state the same to you tonight:

I stand before this congregation today in fear and trembling.

I fear the Lord and I tremble in His presence!

I also stand before you today a husband by choice, a father by desire, a preacher by calling, an official by election and an American by birth.

Today, I have done absolutely nothing to deserve the blessing and freedom that we enjoy as an American.  I can tell you that I am an old-fashioned, flag waving American who believes that America is the greatest nation on the face of the earth.  It would be easy for me to digress from the burden in my soul today and express a clarion call to arms in the defense of America and all that she stands for in a moral sense.

Furthermore, I could expound and declare the current departure of the Church from the faith with all that that entails.  However my task today it far greater. It is one that God Almighty has placed in my heart and soul.  My purpose today is to call the West Virginia District from the brink of the cliff of business as usual and going our own way and mediocrity.

We cannot allow our selves:

  • to join the chorus of complacency,
  • to transform from Apostolic to apostasy or
  • to live in a shell of hypocrisy while the world around us is descending the slippery slope of everyone doing their own thing.

When men such as Jack Scott, W.T. Poling , H.I. Goodin, E.C. Sowards, D.W. Durst, J.C. Cole, Greene Kitchen and many more men of God who have forged out a trail of tears to bring us to this hour we dare not, I repeat we dare not listen to the strains of the clamoring voices of the world to stand down.

These were men of conviction who stood for what they believed, no matter the cost.  They were men of character and integrity who refused to give up in the face of adversity and hardship.

Rather we better stand up and be counted in this hour.

We must stand up for:

  • Truth
  • Holiness & Righteous Living
  • Contending for the Faith Once Delivered to the Saints
  • Declaring the Whole Counsel of God
  • Doing the right thing

God has called us, the Church to the Kingdom for such a times this.

It is the best of times and it is the worst of times.  But it is in this context that “The People Who Know Their God Shall Be Strong & Do Exploits!”

It’s time, it’s past time for the Church to be the Church.

The Church is the foundation of the Apostles and the Prophets with Jesus Christ as the Chief Cornerstone.

I would further submit to you today that this church is a holy living God-fearing church that has not and does not subscribe to all of the ways of the world that identifies with immoral conduct and living, loose behavior and whatever feels good or whatever you think attitude.  Furthermore we have preached and still preach against lying, cheating, stealing, swearing, gossiping, lustful living, adultery, fornication, drinking and such like.

I would remind us that such were some of us but God saved us by the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Ghost.

It would do all of us well to go through a refresher course of remembering where the Lord brought us from.

Individuals, Preachers & Churches have apostatized the gospel and the moral living standards set forth by the Apostles of old and forged their own direction and ways.

We are witnessing a continual decline in the value system of individual’s, preachers, and churches and frankly I want to draw a RED LINE in the sand and declare: WE WILL GO NO FURTHER.

The positions of our Apostolic Pentecostal forefathers are being ignored today with an attitude that we will do our own thing.  If we do we will do so at our own peril.  I refuse as Superintendent to deviate from the faith once delivered unto the saints.  We will continue to be a truth proclaiming, Bible believing district with the stated goals and purpose of that being we will do our best to reach the lost of our generation.

The Apostle Paul declared ‘some would depart from the faith giving heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils’!  We are surrounded with those who have turned the ‘grace of our God into lasciviousness’ and denied the only Lord God by their actions and behavior.

This is a day of apostasy.

1. renunciation of a religious faith

2. abandonment of a previous loyalty

Individuals, Preachers & Churches are simply walking away from previously held doctrines and convictions.

West Virginia District:  We will continue to uphold the Word of God as it relates to salvation and holy living.

We will continue to be part of the United Pentecostal Church as long as it continues to uphold these tenants of the faith.

Judges 21:25

NIV: "In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as he saw fit."

NASB: "In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did what was right in his own eyes."

MSG: "At that time there was no king in Israel. People did whatever they felt like doing."

AMP: "In those days there was no king in Israel; every man did what was right in his own eyes."

This statement is made three times in these latter chapters. All was well while Joshua and those who assisted him lived; then gradually came disorder. "What is the meaning of this?... There was no king [or counselor] in Israel because in Israel there was no God. The Lord is King. You cannot have a [true] king if you do not have not a God. There was no nominal renunciation of God, no public and blatant atheism, no boastful impiety; there was a deadlier heresy--namely, keeping God as a sign but paying no tribute to Him as a King, worshiping Him possibly in outward form but knowing nothing of the subduing and directing power of godliness. * That is more to be dreaded than any intellectual difficulty of a theological kind....

  • Dead consciences,
  • prayer-less prayers,
  • mechanical formalities

—these are the impediments which overturn... the chariots of progress. This was the case in Israel.

It is the case of America today and sadly is becoming the case of the Church if we are not careful.  I cannot afford to ignore God in my day to day living no more than America or the Church can.

The True Church knows the right God!  He is Jesus; the Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last!  Besides Him there is no God at all!

2 Timothy 3:5   Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof…….

Romans 1:21-22
21   Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
22   Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,

Judges 21:25

NLT: "In those days Israel had no king, so the people did whatever seemed right in their own eyes."

KJV: "In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did that which was right in his own eyes."

We dare not ever find ourselves in a state of being self-satisfied with our current state of affairs.  We must continually stir ourselves lest we fall into this state.  We cannot be satisfied with our present but must continue to reach forward.  We are not willing to be risk takers any longer.  It is so easy to sit back and relax as it were. But the advice that Jesus gave us was to “Occupy till I come”!

West Virginia has been occupying of late.
